In a significant display of industrial growth, Israel’s Elbit Systems has announced a record-breaking order backlog of $30 billion. As the only publicly traded entity among Israel’s top three defense contractors, Elbit’s latest financial report serves as a primary indicator of the surging global demand for high-tech military solutions, driven by a world-wide rush to upgrade defense capabilities.
A strategic pivot toward autonomous systems and automation
The company’s evolution into a fully integrated provider across land, sea, and air has been a key driver of its current success. President and CEO Bezhalel Machlis emphasized that the company is aggressively scaling its production capacity by integrating robotics and artificial intelligence into its manufacturing processes. This technological push is further evidenced by the recent acquisition of Blue White Robotics and a $350 million deal for tank upgrades, highlighting Elbit’s focus on the future of autonomous warfare and electronic connectivity.
Strengthening the European footprint from Greece to Romania
Europe has become a critical theater for Elbit’s expansion, highlighted by a recent $1.4 billion contract for a comprehensive military modernization program. While the specific customer remains undisclosed, the deal includes uncrewed solutions, networked land electronic warfare, and precision-guided munitions. This growth is supported by a physical industrial presence, such as the newly opened unmanned aerial systems facility in Chitila, Romania. This site marks a major milestone in Elbit’s European strategy, following massive contracts with Greece for the PULS artillery system and a $1.63 billion deal involving Serbia.
Global demand outpaces domestic requirements
While domestic demand has risen, the vast majority of Elbit’s backlog—approximately 71%—is attributed to international orders, with Asia and Europe leading the charge. The company’s diverse revenue streams span from cyber defense and electronic warfare to laser systems and software-defined radios. With 49% of the current backlog expected to be executed through 2027, Elbit Systems continues to establish itself as a trusted long-term partner for nations seeking to field advanced, modern armies capable of navigating the complexities of the 21st-century battlefield.
