Battlefield reconnaissance technology is taking a massive leap toward total autonomy with the launch of the Black Recon system. Developed by Teledyne FLIR Defense, this „microdrone” system is specifically designed to be operated directly from manned ground vehicles, providing commanders with an instant aerial perspective without leaving the safety of their armor.

Autonomous launch and recharging directly from the vehicle

The Black Recon system stands out through its triple configuration: a set of three drones operating in a fully automated cycle. Each unit launches autonomously, performs reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition missions, and subsequently returns to the launcher for docking and recharging. This continuous flow ensures a persistent aerial presence, providing ground forces with real-time intelligence and superior situational awareness during high-tempo missions.

Compact performance under 450 grams and testing in extreme conditions

Despite weighing less than 450 grams, each microdrone demonstrates impressive technical capabilities, reaching a top speed of approximately 55 mph and a flight endurance of up to one hour. The system’s reliability has already been validated through rigorous testing conducted in Norway under subarctic winter conditions, as well as trials on high-performance civilian mobile platforms. Market interest is already evident, as the manufacturer confirmed the signing of the first contracts with European customers, while the US Army is expected to evaluate the technology later this year.

The 2027 horizon: From simple surveillance to lethal missions

Commercial availability for the Black Recon system is scheduled for early 2027. However, development plans do not stop at reconnaissance. The system’s architecture is designed to be modular, set to receive updates that will include sensors for detecting chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats, as well as modules capable of carrying lethal payloads, thus transforming the small scout into an active threat-engagement tool.
