Atlanta-based startup Reditus Space announced today the completion of its reusable re-entry vehicle, ENOS. Originally designed for microgravity research, the project has rapidly gained the attention of the Department of Defense, being developed as a test bed for hypersonic technologies and, potentially, as a high-speed target vehicle for next-generation interceptor systems.

Orbital versatility: From scientific research to ballistic targets for interceptors

The ENOS spacecraft is designed to launch and operate on-orbit like a conventional satellite, but with a major strategic advantage: the ability to initiate its own atmospheric re-entry and be recovered via parachute. According to company leadership, the platform can carry payloads for military testing at speeds exceeding Mach 25, providing maximum flexibility for operators who require precise data on material behavior in extreme hypersonic environments.

Strategic defense partnerships: Reditus Space joins the Golden Dome initiative

Despite being a young firm founded only two years ago, Reditus Space has already secured nearly $8 million in funding and earned a spot in the Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA) SHIELD contracting pool. This strategic positioning turns the startup into a key contributor to the current administration’s Golden Dome initiative. Collaborations also extend to the Navy and Air Force, where Reditus is pushing the boundaries of hypersonic modeling regarding turbulence flows and thermal dynamics.

Compact technology at extreme speeds: The first ENOS mission will launch on a SpaceX rocket

Weighing approximately 200 kilograms and sized similarly to a small family refrigerator, the ENOS vehicle represents a technological leap in the miniaturization of re-entry systems. For its inaugural flight, the craft will lift off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and operate in orbit for two months. At the conclusion of the mission, ENOS will re-enter the atmosphere at a staggering speed of Mach 29, testing its in-house developed heat shield before splashing down off the coast of Florida.
