The Space Development Agency (SDA) has taken a decisive step in strengthening the Pentagon’s defensive shield, awarding L3Harris Technologies and Sierra Space contracts totaling $1.75 billion. The funds are designated for the development of 36 high-performance satellites designed for warning, tracking, and identifying ballistic targets, serving as essential pillars in the protection architecture known as the „Golden Dome.” These new orbital assets are engineered to provide advanced defense against increasingly sophisticated and evolving missile threats.
Race against time for 2028: AMDT3 satellites become a top priority for the Pentagon
The new orbital platforms, officially dubbed „Accelerated Missile Defense Tranche 3” (AMDT3), must be ready for launch by 2028. This deadline is directly aligned with President Donald Trump’s mandate for the Golden Dome system to be fully operational within that year. The speed of implementation is remarkable for military standards, especially since previous tracking layer contracts were not slated for launch until 2029. This acceleration underscores a strategic urgency to ensure the homeland and allied forces are protected by a persistent, global surveillance network.
Technological innovation in orbit: L3Harris and Sierra Space revolutionize hypersonic threat detection
The technological effort is split between two industry leaders to ensure comprehensive coverage and fire-control quality data. L3Harris will provide 18 specialized satellites capable of generating high-confidence coordinates for interceptors. Meanwhile, Sierra Space is leveraging significant private investment and state-of-the-art 8K focal plane arrays to detect and track missiles from the moment of launch. By utilizing advanced software and high-resolution sensors, these satellites transform passive observation into an active defense tool, capable of neutralizing even the most advanced hypersonic vectors.
