In a strategic move destined to redefine the aerospace technology landscape, startup Joby Aviation has officially announced the acquisition of military technology firm Resonant Sciences. This half-billion-dollar transaction marks the transformation of the Ohio-based company into the central pillar of Joby’s new dedicated defense division, signaling a paradigm shift in the air taxi industry’s priorities.

A colossal investment for technological supremacy

The acquisition agreement, valued at $500 million, consists of approximately $450 million in cash, with the remaining $50 million covered by Joby common stock. Although the announcement was made public today, the transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to necessary regulatory approvals. Through this step, Joby not only expands its portfolio but also secures access to the critical infrastructure required for high-level government contracts.

Pivoting toward defense: Beyond the limitations of electric propulsion

While Joby initially positioned itself as a leader in electric urban transport, autonomy challenges forced a re-evaluation of its strategy for the military market. Previous testing with the Air Force demonstrated that pure electric aircraft could not fulfill complex defense missions due to limited range. The acquisition of Resonant Sciences is the direct answer to this barrier: a focus on autonomous systems, electronic countermeasures, and hybrid-electric or hydrogen-electric propulsion capable of meeting the Pentagon’s rigorous demands.

Autonomy and security: The strengths of the new entity

Resonant Sciences will maintain its identity and leadership team under the Joby umbrella, continuing to be led by co-founder and CEO J. Micah North. The integration will allow the fusion of Resonant’s signal processing and RF sensing capabilities with Joby’s proprietary autonomy stack. A crucial advantage of this merger is access to personnel with security clearances and secure facilities—elements Joby previously lacked—which will allow the company to directly manage classified military programs while strengthening existing partnerships with giants like L3Harris.

Consolidating capital in a transforming market

The announcement comes at a time of high industry activity, shortly after rivals Archer Aviation signed a similar deal with Boeing subsidiaries. To support this aggressive expansion and ensure necessary liquidity, Joby has also launched a stock distribution plan aiming to raise up to $750 million. This capital injection, combined with Resonant’s expertise, positions Joby as a formidable player in the race for the future of autonomous aviation and national defense.
