In a significant move that reshapes the defense contractor landscape, the Space Force has selected Boeing to expand the critical communications constellation, taking over from the system’s original manufacturer.

A strategic victory over Lockheed Martin

Space Systems Command (SSC) has officially announced the award of a $2 billion contract to Boeing for the development and delivery of two new Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellites. The decision marks a notable change in direction, as Boeing secured the deal over Lockheed Martin, the firm that designed and built the first five units of this orbital fleet.

The new agreement covers the entire lifecycle, from development and integration to on-orbit testing. This extension of the MUOS service life follows a rigorous competition that began in 2024, when both industry giants were awarded initial $66 million design contracts.

Securing naval communications through 2035

The new spacecraft are scheduled for launch no earlier than 2031 and 2032, bringing the total number of MUOS satellites in the constellation to seven. This infrastructure is vital for the U.S. military and its allies, providing secure ultra-high frequency (UHF) communications, which are particularly essential for global naval force coordination.

With the deployment of these new satellites, the system is expected to remain operational until at least 2035. The financial commitment is substantial, with research, development, and procurement budgets projected to exceed $2.6 billion through 2031, reflecting the strategic importance of maintaining secure connectivity in operational theaters.

Commercial horizons and the future of military space

While Boeing prepares for the construction phase, the future architecture of military communications may undergo profound transformations. Beyond the current investment, military authorities have been working on a long-range strategy that could see some or all narrowband communication missions transferred to commercial providers.

This hybrid approach could offer greater flexibility and resilience at a time when space is becoming an increasingly contested domain. Until these commercial visions are fully realized, the Boeing-built MUOS satellites will remain the backbone of encrypted dialogue for rapid response forces.
