In a recent wargame held in Las Vegas, new AI tools accelerated the decision-making process for a command staff sevenfold, according to the Air Force.

„Decision Advantage Sprint” Reveals AI’s Potential

The experiment, known as the „Decision Advantage Sprint for Human-Machine Teaming” (DASH), is the first in a series of three planned for this year. These wargames aim to explore various aspects of the Air Force’s AI system, the Transformational Model for Decision Advantage. The AI is designed for continuous upgrades with new features, modules, and „microservices” by both military and private-sector teams. Notably, many of the tools used in the first DASH were custom-coded during the exercise itself.

Operational Dilemmas Tackled, Solutions Multiplied

According to an initial analysis, the digital aids doubled the number of operational „dilemmas” that humans were able to address. Furthermore, the AI generated three times as many „valid solutions” to these problems, which ranged from striking enemy targets to refueling friendly aircraft.

Errors on Par: AI Accuracy Matches Human Performance

Addressing concerns about AI errors and „hallucinations,” the Air Force stated that the experiment demonstrated an increase in decision quantity without sacrificing quality.

„Machine answer errors were on par with human error, not bad for a week’s worth of coding,” said Air Force Col. Christopher Cannon, head of the Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS) Cross Functional Team. He emphasized that the exercise proved the value of AI and software services in enhancing battle management.

Transforming Battlefield Decisions

An Air Force official clarified that the Transformational Model aims to revolutionize how the Department of the Air Force, along with Joint and Coalition forces, modernizes command and control (C2). The goal is to enable warfighters to achieve a „decision advantage” by transforming military decisions on the battlefield.

AI, CJADC2, and the Future of Warfare

While armed drones often dominate headlines, the Pentagon is heavily investing in AI for command centers. The goal is to assist commanders in processing the massive amounts of data required in modern warfare. The U.S. military’s primary effort in this area is the Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) system. The objective is not to replace human commanders but to augment them with AI assistants capable of rapidly and accurately processing information.

How the Transformational Model Works

The Air Force’s contribution to CJADC2 is led by Cannon’s ABMS team. The Transformational Model „decomposes” the complexities of military operations into distinct „actionable entities” and proposes specific actions. These entities can be military units, relationships, or events, and the AI-generated options can range from striking a hostile force to resupplying a friendly one.

The AI employed is also more autonomous than publicly available chatbots, using AI „agents” that independently perform tasks previously handled by humans. However, the ultimate goal is not to create an AI commander but an AI staff officer that generates reports, recommendations, and initial plan drafts. This frees up human operators to focus on high-level decisions that require moral judgment.
