Ukraine’s defense technology cluster Brave1 and NATO have launched a joint innovation program to fund defense companies, with the first call specifically targeting counter-drone systems against FPV and Shahed-type drones.

Up to €500 Million Available for Cross-Border Partnerships

The program, described as the first joint innovation grant initiative, is open to companies from Ukraine and NATO member states. Joint ventures between one Ukrainian firm and one from a NATO country can receive funding of up to €500 million per partnership. The call opened this week and aims to accelerate the development of technologies capable of handling the large-scale drone attacks launched by Russia.

Five Priority Areas Identified

Brave1 has highlighted five key areas for funding: active protection systems against FPV drones, affordable counter-Shahed solutions, electromagnetic support for signals intelligence, electromagnetic attack technologies targeting FPVs, and high-altitude platforms. These priorities reflect the urgent operational needs on the battlefield.

Massive Russian Drone Waves Test Ukrainian Defenses

Although Ukraine has accumulated significant experience in drone warfare, the scale and frequency of Russian attacks remain difficult to counter. Between July 25 and 26 alone, Russian forces launched one KH-59 cruise missile, seven Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles, and 136 drones against Ukraine. Moscow is increasingly using jet-powered Shahed drones for deep strikes while employing standard models as a substitute for long-range artillery.

Push for Fast and Affordable Solutions

The Brave1-NATO program arrives at a time when Ukrainian air defenses are under heavy pressure from cheap, numerous aerial threats. The emphasis on affordable and rapidly deployable technologies signals the intent of both sides to shorten the time between development and frontline use.
