A Step Forward in Aviation Defense

The Republic of Colombia has officially signed a letter of intent with the Kingdom of Sweden for the procurement of Saab Gripen fighter jets, as announced by Colombian President Gustavo Petro. This move marks a significant development in Colombia’s military capabilities.

President Petro highlighted on X that the acquisition involves a completely new fleet of aircraft featuring the latest technology, similar to those currently deployed in Brazil, specifically the Saab 39 Gripen. “The intention is to secure this advanced fighter capability for Colombia,” he stated in his translated remarks.

Sweden’s Response and Next Steps

Sweden’s Minister of Defense, Pål Jonson, expressed satisfaction with Colombia’s decision, noting on X, “It is gratifying that President Petro has announced that Colombia is choosing the Gripen as its fighter jet. Negotiations will now begin.”

While the specifics of the deal remain undisclosed—including the number of jets, delivery schedules, and overall costs—President Petro indicated that the agreement promises commercial offsets, such as the establishment of a solar panel production plant in Colombia.

Mattias Rådström from Saab confirmed the positive outlook on the deal, stating, “It is very positive for Saab and Sweden that Colombia’s President Petro has announced his intention to acquire the Gripen E/F advanced multi-role fighter.” Although the contract has yet to be finalized, Rådström emphasized the firm’s eagerness to conclude negotiations with Colombia.

Navigating Challenges

Colombia has been contemplating the Gripen purchase for an extended period; however, concerns arose last month when local media reported that the US government might not approve the re-export of the fighter jet’s General Electric F414 engine. Such a restriction could potentially pressure Colombia into considering a competing F-16 offer.

Nevertheless, Saab officials promptly dismissed this report, asserting that the matter has not resurfaced since the unverified claims. In a statement to Breaking Defense, Saab reaffirmed its preparedness, stating, “Fighter aircraft procurement is often surrounded by rumors. Saab has had all the necessary licenses and permits in place for Colombia for many years, so we have no reason to speculate further.”

Expanding Saab’s Footprint in South America

Securing the deal in Colombia would further solidify Saab’s position in South America, adding a new operator of the Gripen fighter. The company already has a significant partnership in Brazil, where its Gripen agreement has led to the establishment of a facility for the aircraft’s development, assembly, testing, and evaluation in São Paulo.

In 2014, Brazil signed a contract with Saab for the production of 36 Gripen aircraft, which includes 28 single-seat Gripen E variants and 8 two-seat Gripen F variants. According to Saab, the delivery of these aircraft is on schedule for completion by 2027.

The potential acquisition of Gripen fighters by Colombia signals a progressive step in enhancing its defense capabilities while fostering international collaboration in military aviation.
