Strengthening Defense Collaborations
The UAE’s defense powerhouse, EDGE Group, is making significant strides in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, by securing new agreements for counter-drone system production and advancing its anti-ship missile project. These announcements come just in time for the LAAD Defense & Security expo, an annual event in Brazil focused on military and defense innovation.
In a recent statement, EDGE revealed that it has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Brazilian Navy to jointly develop a counter-drone system. This initiative will establish a working group made up of technical experts from both EDGE and Brazil, aimed at enhancing their existing partnership.
The proposed counter-drone systems will utilize advanced sensors, including radar and electro-optical technologies, along with signal jamming capabilities, allowing for effective neutralization of threats posed by autonomous aerial and surface vehicles. As of the latest updates, EDGE has not provided further details regarding the LOI to Breaking Defense.
Addressing Emerging Threats
Kristan Alexander, a senior fellow at the UAE Rabdan Security & Defence Institute, highlighted Brazil’s ongoing efforts to develop conventional air defense systems and improve maritime surveillance. He noted that counter-unmanned aerial systems are an evolving threat, especially in asymmetric warfare contexts, border security, and maritime domain awareness. Alexander emphasized EDGE’s expertise in electronic warfare and signals intelligence, areas where Brazil’s capabilities are somewhat limited.
Unlike larger defense contractors, EDGE focuses on co-developing and tailoring defense solutions to meet Brazil’s specific operational requirements, such as those found in jungle environments or along expansive coastlines. This agility allows EDGE to provide effective support where larger Western suppliers may not prioritize local adaptation.
Advancing Anti-Ship Missile Development
In another significant announcement, EDGE Group, alongside Brazilian firm SIATT and the Brazilian Navy, is progressing to the next phase of the MANSUP-ER anti-ship missile development project. This includes a strategic licensing agreement that allows EDGE to acquire the intellectual property for the extended variant of the MANSUP missile, previously developed by SIATT.
A Partnership Built on Collaboration
Leonardo Jacopo Maria Mazzucco, an independent researcher focused on Gulf security affairs, views EDGE’s expansion in Brazil as a strategic blend of economic and geopolitical motivations. He noted that both the UAE and Brazil share interests in diversifying defense partnerships beyond traditional suppliers, focusing on building relationships with emerging players within the global defense landscape.
Despite Brazil’s robust military-industrial base, financial constraints have hindered its ability to maintain cutting-edge armaments and secure consistent investment in research and development. For EDGE, Latin America represents a relatively untapped market, providing promising avenues for developing sustained export revenues.
Alexander reiterated that Brazil’s mature yet developing defense industry makes it an ideal collaborator for EDGE rather than a competitor. He pointed out that EDGE identifies opportunities to co-develop, co-produce, and integrate technologies, especially in unmanned systems, electronic warfare, and smart weaponry.
Brazil as a Gateway to Latin America
As the economic and military leader in the region, Brazil stands as a key entry point for EDGE into Latin America. Success in Brazil could pave the way for further expansion into countries such as Argentina, Colombia, and other regional markets. EDGE, a conglomerate of over 25 defense firms, has been actively expanding within Latin America since 2023, with its inaugural international office established in Brazil.
In a February interview, EDGE CEO Hamad Al Marar conveyed the company’s vision for continuous growth and international alliances, stating: „Our plan is to grow internationally and see how we can establish alliances with countries outside the UAE.” This commitment to expand its defense presence underscores EDGE’s ambition to solidify its role on the global military stage through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions.
