KNDS, the leading Franco-German armored vehicles manufacturer, today declared that its board of directors has given the green light for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in Paris and Frankfurt next year. This significant financial maneuver, subject to favorable market conditions, marks a pivotal moment for the company’s long-term growth ambitions.

Funding the Vision: Broadening Capital Access for Innovation

In a statement disclosing the news, KNDS affirmed that the IPO „will support KNDS’s long-term growth strategy, broadening its access to capital markets and enabling continued investment in industrial capacity, technology and innovation.” As a joint venture formed by Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France’s Nexter, KNDS boasts an impressive order intake of €11.2 billion ($13.1 billion) in 2024. Its extensive portfolio encompasses critical defense platforms, including Leopard 2 main battle tanks, Boxer infantry fighting vehicles, Griffon armored personnel carriers, alongside advanced artillery ammunition and communication systems.

KNDS CEO Jean-Paul Alary articulated the company’s strategic vision: “KNDS’s model, uniting key nations within a single group, embodies the path toward a collective and efficient future for Europe’s defence, driven by one shared goal: to contribute to greater stability and lasting security across Europe and beyond.”

Bolstering Capabilities: A Novel Mobile Artillery Solution for Italy

The IPO announcement closely follows a major development unveiled just yesterday: KNDS Deutschland and Italy’s Leonardo are joining forces to offer a newly-developed mobile artillery solution to the Italian Army. A Letter of Intent has been signed to advance the design of this innovative platform, which will seamlessly integrate KNDS Deutschland’s advanced artillery gun module (AGM – a 155mm/L52 howitzer) with an „enhanced version” of Leonardo’s protected wheeled vehicle platform.

This powerful combination, according to a joint statement, is poised to “significantly contribute to increasing the system’s combat power and effectiveness,” by leveraging Leonardo’s state-of-the-art electronics, C5I, and UAV defense technologies alongside KNDS’s cutting-edge artillery system. The solution is slated for the Italian Army’s upcoming procurement program, though further details regarding its acquisition timeline remain undisclosed.

Strategic Partnerships and Industry Supply Chain Pressures

Beyond the immediate product offering, this emerging mobile artillery partnership aims to intensify industrial cooperation to bolster supply chain resilience and accelerate time to market. This focus is particularly timely, as KNDS Deutschland has previously raised concerns about competing demands for critical components like microchips and armor steel, vital for main battle tank production, as noted in a 2024 report by the UK-based International Institute for Strategic Studies.

A Leonardo spokesperson confirmed that such industrial collaborations are central to their strategy, allowing them to “strengthen supply chain resilience having more players focusing on shared initiatives,” while also underscoring the critical importance of sustaining force interoperability across Europe. Italy currently operates the PzH 2000 155mm/L52 howitzer, a KNDS-designed platform produced under license by Leonardo and the Italian Iveco-Oto Melara Consortium (CIO).

This new collaborative venture also comes after a previous attempt at deeper industrial integration between Leonardo and KNDS stalled in 2024. Negotiations for the joint development and production of the Leopard 2A8 main battle tank broke down due to an inability to agree on a configuration. Nevertheless, the current initiatives highlight a persistent drive towards robust industrial partnerships and strategic integration within the dynamic European defense ecosystem.
