UK, Japan, and Italy’s GCAP Initiative Advances Towards Sixth-Generation Fighter Development
The Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), a collaborative effort between the UK, Japan, and Italy to develop a sixth-generation fighter aircraft by 2035, is on the verge of a significant breakthrough. Executives involved in the program anticipate the award of initial contracts for subsystems by the end of the year.
ISANKE & ICS: The Networking Backbone
A consortium of four firms — ELT Group, Leonardo Electronics Italy, Leonardo UK, and Mitsubishi Electric — has been tasked with delivering the Integrated Sensing and Non-Kinetic Effects & Integrated Communications Systems (ISANKE & ICS) package. This package is essential for the networking capabilities of the sixth-generation jet, including subsystems like the Multi-Function Radio Frequency System (MRFS) and advanced self-protection features.
First International Contract Anticipated
Andrew Howard, director for Future Combat Air at Leonardo UK, expressed optimism, stating, „We expect to receive our first international contract this year against relatively stable, high-level requirements, which is what’s required to disaggregate the work allocation.”
Harmonization and Collaboration
Howard outlined the process by which the three governments will establish a collective requirement through the UK-based GCAP International Government Organisation (GIGO), which will then task the Lead Systems Integrator (LSI) joint venture (comprising BAE Systems, Leonardo Spa, and the Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Company) to procure an ISANKE & ICS solution from the consortium.
This will involve harmonizing efforts and fostering collaboration among the participating companies, including personnel movement between countries to facilitate joint teamwork.
Technical Vision and Consortium Crystallization
Howard emphasized that the technical vision for the ISANKE & ICS solution involves integrating advanced sensors to a higher degree than ever before. This vision has enabled work allocation and the formation of a consortium, all of which are now „crystallizing.”
Readiness for Contract Award
Pietro Vanotti, Senior Vice President of Future Combat Air Systems at Leonardo Electronics Italy, affirmed the consortium’s readiness to receive the first order later in the year. Final agreements are in progress, and the consortium expects to be fully prepared to secure the initial international contract.
Increased Activity and Challenges
Mitsubishi Electric’s General Manager of the GCAP Department, Masahiro Suzuki, highlighted the anticipated increase in activity among the participating nations this year, following the activation of the ISANKE & ICS consortium.
However, Alberto de Arcangelis, Senior Vice President for Future Business and Public Financing at ELT Group, cautioned that the project’s ambitious timeframe will be the „biggest challenge” facing the GCAP. The goal is to achieve initial operational capability by 2035, requiring the companies to leverage disruptive technologies and expertise to meet this demanding schedule.
