In a decisive move aimed at bolstering the defenses of its Middle Eastern allies against escalating Iranian missile and drone attacks, the United States today announced a flurry of potential „emergency” Foreign Military Sales. These high-value equipment acquisitions are deemed critical to replace munitions and systems expended in the recent defensive struggle.
Billions in Air Defense: A Swift Response to Escalation
The State Department signaled its readiness to greenlight substantial deals. Kuwait could see an $8 billion package for Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor radars and associated equipment. The United Arab Emirates is eyeing a $4.5 billion deal for a long-range radar and other equipment designed to integrate with Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems, alongside an additional $2.1 billion for counter-drone systems, $1.2 billion for air-to-air missiles, and $644 million for F-16 munitions and upgrades. Meanwhile, Jordan is poised to receive $70.5 million for aircraft repair work and spare parts.
„National Emergency”: Bypassing Congressional Scrutiny
To expedite these critical deliveries, the State Department invoked an emergency clause. For the radar sale to Kuwait, a detailed justification was provided, stating that „an emergency exists that requires the immediate sale to Kuwait of the above defense articles and defense services is in the national security interests of the United States.” This determination effectively „waived” congressional review requirements, an exceptional step underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Escalating Iranian Aggression: A Region Under Siege
Each Middle Eastern nation targeted by these sales has faced Iranian aggression, particularly since the United States and Israel launched large-scale military operations against Tehran last month. In Kuwait, six American soldiers were killed in a drone strike on a US command center. The UAE has disproportionately borne the brunt of Iranian attacks, engaging seven missiles and 15 unmanned aerial vehicles just today, according to its Ministry of Defense. This accelerated offensive from Iran has precipitated the need for immediate and comprehensive defensive measures.
