The United States, Canada, and Finland have announced a new trilateral initiative today, named the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort or „ICE Pact,” aimed at collaborating on the construction of a „fleet” of modern polar icebreakers. A US official described this as a „strategic imperative” in the competitive landscape of the Arctic region.
The ICE Pact, set to be formalized through a memorandum of understanding by the year’s end, includes plans for enhanced information sharing on ship production, joint efforts for workforce development allowing cross-training at each other’s shipyards, and an open invitation to other allies and partners to procure icebreakers from ICE Pact members.
