L3Harris has introduced a new pair of aerial munitions, dubbed Red Wolf and Green Wolf, designed to be launched in swarms from various platforms. These munitions are intended to provide kinetic effects, employ electronic warfare capabilities, or act as decoys against enemy fire.
Integrated on USMC AH-1Z Viper: Versatile Launch Platforms
The Red Wolf and Green Wolf munitions have been successfully integrated onto a US Marine Corps AH-1Z Viper. Company executives stated that the capability could also be launched from other aerial, seaboard, or ground platforms, but declined to disclose specific platforms due to customer sensitivity.
Red Wolf and Green Wolf: Kinetic and Electronic Warfare Capabilities
Red Wolf is designed as a kinetic munition, while Green Wolf is intended to employ electronic warfare capabilities or serve as a decoy.
Lethal, Modular, and Affordable: Closing Long-Range Kill Chains
„Our launched effects ‘wolf pack’ provides U.S. military branches — regardless of platform — with a significant advantage in closing long-range kill chains, defeating adversarial threats in challenging environments, and protecting assets,” said Ed Zoiss, president of space and airborne systems at L3Harris. „The Red Wolf and Green Wolf are lethal, modular, affordable, and ready to hunt.”
Decade of Development: Extensive Testing and Low-Rate Production
L3Harris has dedicated 10 years to designing and developing these munitions, conducting over 40 test flights to date, with more flights planned for the year. The executives confirmed that Red Wolf and Green Wolf are currently in low-rate initial production but did not disclose specific customers. They estimated the price per munition to be between $300,000 and $500,000.
Targeting Marine Corps’ Precision Attack Strike Missile Program
Red and Green Wolf are targeting the Marine Corps’ Precision Attack Strike Missile program, which aims to equip the AH-1Z Viper fleet with extended range capabilities anticipated for potential conflicts in the Indo-Pacific region. L3Harris executives stated that the wolf pack capability exceeded the service’s objectives.
New Solid Rocket Motor Production Campus in Arkansas
Separately, L3Harris also announced plans „to construct an extensive large solid rocket motor (LSRM) production campus.”
Fortifying Domestic Rocket Motor Industrial Base
„Arkansas is a great place for L3Harris to fortify the domestic solid rocket motor industrial base, with its dedicated workforce and strong state and local partnerships,” said Christopher Kubasik, L3Harris’s CEO. „Large solid rocket motors are essential to our nation’s missile and strategic defense, and as the Trusted Disruptor, we are strengthening our ability to produce these systems rapidly and at scale, which is essential for current demand and the Golden Dome missile defense shield.”
