Commitment to Advanced Defense Systems
Romania has officially committed to acquiring 32 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fifth-generation fighter jets by signing a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA). This procurement, valued at approximately $6.4 billion, marks a significant step in enhancing Romania’s defense capabilities.
Joining a European Coalition
With this acquisition, Romania aligns itself with a broad array of European customers for the F-35 platform, including Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and the UK. This collaboration aims to strengthen military cohesion across NATO member states.
Lockheed Martin’s Statement on the LOA
In response to the signing of the LOA, Lockheed Martin expressed that this decision signifies a major milestone in Romania’s defense strategy and its commitment to maintaining a robust and advanced military force.
Strengthening NATO Deterrence
Lt. Gen. Mike Schmidt, director and program executive officer of the F-35 Joint Program Office, emphasized that the integration of the F-35 into the Romanian Air Force would significantly bolster NATO’s deterrence capabilities by providing unmatched strategic, operational, and tactical advantages.
Support for Romanian Pilots
Schmidt further noted that the F-35 Joint Program Office is committed to fostering a strong relationship with Romania to ensure a successful transition, along with comprehensive support for Romanian pilots and maintainers as the cooperation progresses.
Ambassador’s Remarks on Future Prospects
During the LOA signing ceremony in Bucharest, US Ambassador to Romania Kathleen Kavalec stated, “We expect by 2030 these planes will be flying above Romania,” highlighting Romania’s ongoing reliance on its fleet of Lockheed Martin F-16 fourth-generation fighters in the interim. The transition to the F-35 will be aided by a F-16 training center.
Enhancing Regional Security
Kavalec pointed out that the F-35 order “will take Romania even a step forward,” benefiting both Romanian security and the NATO Alliance. She stressed the importance of these aircraft in air policing roles, stating that Romania’s participation in NATO-wide air policing will enhance its security footprint and maintain parity with other alliance members.
This acquisition highlights Romania’s commitment to modernizing its military forces and adapting to the evolving security landscape, ensuring that it plays a vital role within NATO.
