Romania has confirmed its selection of the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Spyder air defense system, a company spokesperson told Breaking Defense today.
Deal Follows Months of Speculation
The announcement follows the Romanian Ministry of National Defense’s statement on Monday that a deal between local firm CN Romtehnica SA and Rafael was finalized on July 18th. Prior to today, the specific Rafael system chosen was unclear.
NATO Ally Joins Spyder Ranks
Romania, like the Czech Republic (which chose Spyder in 2020), is a NATO member, adding to the system’s credibility and interoperability within the alliance.
Three Contracts, Six Integrated Systems
The agreement comprises three contracts for six integrated air defense systems, with the first two systems expected within three years of the first contract signing. The signing timeline remains unconfirmed.
Protecting Against Modern Air Threats
The acquisition aims to equip the army with advanced systems to defend against air threats, including drones and cruise missiles, while adhering to NATO requirements.
Comprehensive Package: Training, Simulation, and Support
The $2.3 billion deal includes a training and education system, a simulation system for VSHORAD operators, six SHORAD systems, and six VSHORAD systems, along with ammunition, training, and logistical support.
Minister Draws Parallel to Iron Dome
Romania’s Minister of National Defense Ionut Moșteanu referenced the Iron Dome, highlighting Rafael’s role in Israel’s layered air defense system, indicating the level of protection Romania hopes to achieve.
Confirmed After Rumors and Reports
The deal had been rumored for over a month. Globes reported on July 2 that Romania would procure Spyder for short and ultra-short range with Python 5 missiles (range of approximately 20 kilometers).
Israeli Air Defense Systems Gain Traction in Europe
This deal continues the trend of European nations acquiring Israeli air defense systems, following Germany’s purchase of Israel’s Arrow system and Finland’s acquisition of David’s Sling.
Romania Prioritizes Defense Amidst Regional Instability
In response to the Ukraine war, Romania has been acquiring new defense systems, including electro-optical and electronic warfare capabilities from Elbit Systems. Rafael demonstrated its BNET tactical communications system in Romania in July 2023.
