In the latest act of the national farce, where Romanian Justice has transformed the courtroom into a macabre stand-up comedy show, the file of Mr. Pop Ionuț-Costin, former Petrobrazi Extrication Commander, receives not one, but three new „spotlights” from Parliament. What seemed like an „odyssey of blind bureaucracy” (source: Incisiv de Prahova) has escalated to the level of a Shakespearean tragedy with silent film nuances, where, from the Parquet’s „territorial competence” to „leather gloves” on gas detectors, Romania proves that excellence in absurdity knows no bounds.
The Parquet, the Perfect Magician: Logic Disappears, Case Closure Reappears (aici)
Let’s recall the first act: the Prosecutor’s Office attached to Sector 1 Court, with an elegance worthy of a magic trick, „closed” Ionuț-Costin Pop’s file. The reason? Ah, the famous „territorial competence”! Because, isn’t it, if the crimes took place at the PETROBRAZI Refinery, Prahova County, but FALK FIRE SERVICES S.R.L. has its registered office in Bucharest, it’s only logical for the Sector 1 Prosecutor’s Office to investigate! It’s like calling firefighters from Constanța to extinguish a fire in Cluj, because the house owner has a relative by the sea. A „flexible logic” we called it then. Now, in light of new revelations, it seems more like a „diversion strategy” from a truth that’s far too inconvenient.
The investigation itself was a masterpiece of superficiality: an economic director interviewed (what did he have to do with technical matters?), key witnesses ignored (DUMITRESCU ADRIAN, prevention service chief, whose testimony would have been crucial, but probably too technical for the Parquet), potential forgeries in documents ignored (forged signatures, no graphoscopic expert analysis), and, the cherry on top, the claimant himself, Mr. Pop Ionuț-Costin, never questioned! Why bother a man who wants to shed light, when you can easily close the case in the dark?
And when the court, probably seeing that justice is blinder than a sightless statue, ordered the file returned to the Parquet for investigation, what do you think happened? According to the classic provisions of Romanian justice: another closure! Thus, Ionuț-Costin Pop, like a Sisyphus of Romania, pushes the rock of truth, only for the Parquet to roll it back down, giving it an extra kick, even after the „enlightened ones” (i.e., the court) told him to push it harder.
FALK FIRE SERVICES: From Extinguisher to Smoke Bombs with Phantom Contracts
And if Ionuț-Costin Pop’s case seemed like an isolated incident, now deputy Adrian-George AXINIA (AUR) from Prahova has sounded the alarm in Parliament, lifting the veil on FALK FIRE SERVICES SRL’s practices. The accusations? Nothing less than „undeclared work, implicitly tax evasion,” employment contracts suspended without the employees’ knowledge (discovered from the bank, of course, because the company certainly wouldn’t tell you your contract disappeared!), unpaid medical leave, and an innovative illegal „source deduction” from contracts, without the employees’ prior consent.
In other words, a company that should prevent and extinguish fires seems to be engaged, instead, in burning its own employees, with fiscal smoke bombs and phantom documents. It’s a subtle but savory irony, worthy of a pamflet, for an emergency services company to create emergencies and abuses for its own staff.
Houdini’s Refineries: Pollution with Leather Gloves and Pocket-Change Fines
But the true showstopper, the element of absolute dark humor, comes from the Ministry of Environment and, especially, the MAI (Ministry of Internal Affairs).
The Ministry of Environment, through Minister Mircea FECHET, bluntly informs us that at Lukoil-Petrotel Ploiești, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) limits were exceeded, resulting in a fine of 15,000 lei. At OMV PETROM (Petrobrazi Refinery), the same story: H2S exceedances, fines of 100,000 lei and 500,000 lei. Why? Because a „gasoline pipeline accident” occurred during an overhaul. An accident that, at least publicly, we all forgot about. A paltry price for massive pollution and ecological risk. It’s like getting a speeding ticket after demolishing an entire building with your car.
But the peak of absurdity is reached by the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), in a response sent through the MAI. At OMV-Petrom Brazi, they discovered the following:
- Gas detectors covered with… leather gloves! At the Gasoline Railcar Loading Ramp, 4 out of 5 gas sensors were covered with gloves, „thus preventing their proper functioning.” The best, most cynical detail: „This situation was remedied during the inspection.” Meaning, they probably took the gloves off when they saw the inspectors! This is the perfect metaphor for Romania: we know it’s dangerous, but we hide the problem with gloves, and when the „inspection” comes, we pretend everything is fine. It’s a farce, an illusion, a defiance of any logic of safety.
- Massive oil spills of 100 m² at the Crude Oil Railcar Loading Ramp, a veritable sea of oil, accumulated in channels, „favoring the propagation and development of a fire.” An open invitation to catastrophe.
- Fire extinguishing systems disconnected! Emergency buttons removed from power, and the foreman claims the lines are „in preservation,” but without documentation.
For all these acts of criminal negligence, which could have led to a catastrophe of immense proportions, the total fine? 50,000 lei! Less than a month’s rent for the halls in Vălenii de Munte (source: previous article), an amount that would probably cover the cost of the leather gloves and a few buckets of sand.
The Absurd Epilogue: The Citizen, a Toy in the Hands of a Broken System
The Pop Ionuț-Costin case is no longer just a stinging slap to justice, but a series of uppercuts to the head, from the Prosecutor’s Office to the workplace environment. He, a former Extrication Commander, worked in an environment where gas detectors wore gloves, oil spills were commonplace, and fire extinguishing systems were „in preservation.” All, under the eyes of a justice system that prefers to close cases and control institutions that impose ludicrous fines for catastrophic risks.
Justice, occupational safety, and environmental protection in Romania? A grotesque spectacle, where the only reality is cynicism, and the only constant is systemic incompetence. And we, the taxpayers, are the captive audience at this macabre show. Because in Romania’s Banana Republic (with bottled water!), truth is an option, justice a flexible concept, and safety… well, safety is just a pair of leather gloves. We will return, probably with a new episode of this endless telenovela, where truth is optional and gloves are mandatory.
