President Donald Trump has nominated Lt. Gen. Christopher LaNeve to succeed Gen. James Mingus as the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army. Mingus has held the position since January 2024.

Nomination Details

The nomination, announced on Monday, names LaNeve, currently serving as the Senior Military Assistant to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, as the nominee.

Mingus’ Tenure

According to an Army source who spoke with Breaking Defense, Mingus „always intended” for this to be „his last job,” suggesting the change is not entirely unexpected. Mingus’ office declined to comment on the pending nomination, with spokesman Maj. Peter Sulzona stating that the service does not comment on such matters.

Mingus’ Accomplishments

During his tenure as Vice Chief, Mingus played a key role in overseeing the Army Transformation Initiative (ATI), which involved program cuts and funding reallocation aligned with the service’s modernization priorities. This included controversial decisions to cut aviation programs. Mingus also oversaw the Next Generation Command and Control initiative, the Army’s top modernization priority.

LaNeve’s Background

Prior to his current role advising Secretary Hegseth, LaNeve served as the Commanding General of the Eighth Army in South Korea, as well as the Special Assistant to the Commanding General of Army Forces Command and the Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division.
