Lockheed Martin is actively pursuing ways to deliver more affordable, mass-producible munitions to meet the Pentagon’s growing demand. The company is examining adaptations to existing systems, like the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) and Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM), to achieve this goal, Breaking Defense reports.

Adapting Existing Systems

Tim Cahill, Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control President, suggested potential modifications such as „less expensive or exquisite” guidance components, additive manufacturing, and eliminating stealth coatings. He emphasized that the company is exploring various angles and working with new entrants to identify enabling technologies.

Production Goals and Supply Chain Challenges

The Pentagon aims to double the production rate of JASSM and LRASM from 1,100 to 2,200 rounds per year by fiscal 2030. Cahill acknowledged that the munitions supply chain has faced challenges, but suppliers can largely support ambitious production goals with some assistance.

Addressing Supply Chain Concerns

Cahill highlighted the need for increased capacity through multiple suppliers, both domestically and internationally. He also expressed concerns about „complex” parts like solid rocket motors and seekers, as well as acquiring sufficient raw materials like titanium.

Lower-Cost Air Defense Solutions

The Pentagon’s push for more munitions extends to air and missile defense systems, where traditional platforms like the Patriot face high demand and escalating costs. Cahill remained tight-lipped about specific details of Lockheed Martin’s lower-cost air defense options, citing the „highly competitive” market.

Hybrid Approach

Cahill emphasized the need for both low-cost and high-performance interceptors, recognizing that sophisticated threats will continue to require advanced capabilities. He suggested a hybrid approach involving both kinetic and non-kinetic solutions to address the evolving threat landscape.
