Analysts debate the accuracy of Trump’s claim, but agree Europe’s need for US defense products is real.

After former US President Donald Trump suggested the European Union would purchase „hundreds of billions” of dollars-worth of US weapon systems, experts diverged on the claim’s veracity, but concurred it reflects Europe’s genuine need and interest in American defense products.

Trump’s Bold Assertion

During a meeting with European Union President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump highlighted potential EU investments for a future trade agreement, noting the military sector as a „big number.” He claimed the EU would be „purchasing hundreds of billions of dollars-worth of military equipment.”

Analyst Skepticism

Analyst Max Bergmann called Trump’s „hundreds of billions” claim a stretch, suggesting it should be taken „figuratively.” However, he acknowledged the trend of Europeans buying American weapons, citing NATO’s recent agreement to increase defense spending.

Capital Alpha Partners suggested the figure is „unlikely” within five years, noting that several European nations collectively spent $104 billion on military equipment in 2024.

A Realistic Possibility?

European defense analyst Tim Lawrenson considered Trump’s figure attainable over five years, especially given spending habits since the Ukraine war. He noted that „It doesn’t take too many F-35 deals [to reach spending] in the tens of billions.”

Europe’s Industrial Capacity in Question

Lawrenson noted that EU countries will likely buy a lot of kit from the US due to increased defense spending and the limitations of European production capacity.

Nele Loorents from the International Centre for Defence and Security emphasized that EU countries deciding to buy US equipment will depend on how quickly Europe’s defense industrial base can speed up production lines

Strategic Autonomy vs. US Reliance

Lawrenson argued that continued European investment in US weapons will „to a degree, undermine” Europe’s strategic autonomy plans.

US Perspective: Balancing Act

Bergmann noted that the Pentagon is concerned with a potential Indo-Pacific conflict against China and the need to supply military equipment to Ukraine, which may lead to a lack of capacity to supply Europe. Others in the Trump administration recognize that „if the Europeans go off and invest in their own defense industrial capacity, as opposed to buying from us and further taxing our own defense industrial base, there’s benefit there.”

Bergmann added that while „everyone in Europe agrees that there needs to be more European production, but when it comes to actually making the decision at the national level,” there is a rush to buy US equipment because „They [Europeans] know how to operate it. They know, it’s more reliable.”
