Service eyes machine learning to manage drones, jamming, and future command and control.
The U.S. Army is actively seeking artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools to manage increasingly complex airspace, a critical component of its Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) initiative.
Reducing Commander’s Cognitive Load
In a request for information (RFI) released Wednesday, the Army’s Program Executive Office of Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors (PEO IEW&S) and the NGC2 program manager are looking for AI/ML capabilities to reduce the „cognitive burden” on commanders amidst a surge in aerial systems.
The RFI emphasizes that as the Army integrates advanced technologies and expands its use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), rotary-wing, fixed-wing, and emerging platforms, traditional airspace management methods are being challenged.
Key AI/ML Capabilities Sought
The Army is particularly interested in AI/ML capabilities that enable:
- Real-time detection and resolution
- Integration of UAS and loitering munitions
- Predictive analytics
- EW jamming tools
- Strategies to reduce environmental impact
The RFI outlines both a short-term „fight tonight” capability using existing tech, and a longer-term „vision” for „scalable and adaptive management.”
Rapid Prototyping for Pacific Exercise
Interested vendors must respond to the solicitation by Aug. 29. The Army is also seeking vendors to deliver minimum viable products (MVP) for the Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center exercise this fall with the 25th Infantry Division. Industry partners must have their MVP ready for deployment by November.
NGC2: Unifying Command and Control
The 25th ID’s participation follows the 4th ID’s designation as the primary experimental unit for NGC2. NGC2 aims to integrate intelligence, C2, and fires into a single system for readily available information, mirroring the Pentagon’s broader Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) effort.
„Team of Teams” Approach
Earlier this month, the Army awarded the first prototype Other Transaction Authority award for NGC2 to Team Anduril. Additional industry teams are expected to be announced in the coming months, signaling a „team of teams” approach to the initiative.
