The British government has awarded Leonardo a strategic £1 billion ($1.3 billion) contract for the acquisition of 23 AW149 multirole helicopters. This crucial decision not only ensures the modernization of the United Kingdom’s air capabilities but also secures the future of Leonardo’s production line in Yeovil, England, ending uncertainties that had lingered over this high-profile procurement.
A Strategic Decision for British Airpower
The announcement, made today by London’s Ministry of Defence, highlights that the new helicopters will operate alongside drones, „to support defence operations around the globe.” The decision also includes a commitment to additional investment in Proteus, Leonardo’s autonomous rotary wing demonstrator, although the exact level of funding or the AW149 delivery timetable has not yet been disclosed. The contract comes just one day after Leonardo’s best-and-final offer expired, suggesting intense last-minute negotiations.
AW149: A Multirole Workhorse for Global Theaters of Operation
The AW149 helicopter is designed to carry up to 16 fully equipped troops and offers a range of 545 nautical miles. Its extensive capabilities include battlefield support, troop transport, logistics support, threat suppression, Close Air Support (CAS), Command and Control (C2), Search and Rescue (SAR), Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC), and maritime patrol operations. This platform is vital for plugging an imminent capability gap caused by the retirement of the Puma HC2 helicopter fleet in March 2025, while also replacing smaller fleets such as the Bell 212, Bell 412, and Airbus AS365 Dauphins. The Ministry of Defence stated that the AW149 NMH program „will deliver multiple rotary wing requirements using a single aircraft-type,” thereby streamlining British capabilities.
Rebirth of Local Production and Export Momentum
This agreement will not only „boost the UK Armed Forces’ battlefield kit” but will also make Britain „Leonardo’s global center for military helicopter production and exports – worth a potential £15 billion over the next decade.” In its proposal, Leonardo committed to moving its AW149 export production line from Vergiate, Italy, to Yeovil, underscoring the potential to target a market of over 500 medium-class helicopters for future sales. The twin-engine AW149 already has significant international customers, including Egypt, Poland, and Thailand.
Overcoming Obstacles: Budget Disputes and Withdrawn Competitors
The contract follows a period of significant uncertainty. Leonardo is the UK’s only local defense helicopter producer, and the future of this national industrial capability was at risk. The uncertainty was heightened by a dispute between the Ministry of Defence and the Treasury, the UK’s finance ministry, which, according to Bloomberg, initially considered the helicopter program „deprioritized.” The intervention of Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves last week was crucial for approving the contract. The decision had also been delayed by the government for inclusion in the forthcoming Defence Investment Plan (DIP), which will define British equipment priorities for the next decade, although its publication has already been postponed. Leonardo became the sole remaining bidder in the NMH competition after Lockheed Martin UK and Airbus UK withdrew their interest in August 2024, citing an inability to meet customer requirements.
Investing in the Future: Autonomous Helicopters and a New Era of Military Aviation
Prior to this announcement, it was reported that the UK had cut the number of NMH aircraft ordered to between 25 and 35 units, down from an advertised upper limit of 44 platforms. The Proteus demonstrator effort is part of a £60 million contract, dedicated to a four-year Rotary Wing Uncrewed Air System Technology Demonstration Programme. This demonstrator aligns with the Royal Navy’s Maritime Aviation Transformation strategy, a long-term evolution plan for the Fleet Air Arm, extending to 2040. These investments underscore the UK’s vision for an advanced and autonomous military aerospace future.
