On a training ground transformed into a desolate landscape of ruins, Israeli soldiers are meticulously simulating complex search and rescue operations. Using modern hydraulic equipment, such as that produced by the Dutch company Holmatro, intervention teams lift massive concrete slabs from piles of rubble, recreating post-impact scenarios, whether caused by missile strikes or natural disasters. These intense exercises are part of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Search and Rescue Brigade’s preparation, operating under the Home Front Command, and underscore a new urgency in the country’s defense strategy.
Preparing for a Multi-Front „Surprise War”
Just days after a visit by IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir to the Home Front Command, where he warned of the possibility of a „surprise war,” the drills at Zikim take on special significance. Although Zamir did not explicitly mention Iran, this nation remains a major threat, capable of inflicting significant damage with ballistic missiles. „Facing multi-front threats, the Home Front Command stands ready — qualified, trained, and alert,” Zamir declared, emphasizing the capability to contend with an attack on the civilian population and save lives.
The training, involving the 974th battalion and its reservists, is considered the first large-scale exercise of its kind held at Zikim, at a site specifically designed to replicate destroyed buildings. This area, regularly used for training before October 7, was itself attacked by Hamas and served as a frontline in fighting in northern Gaza during the recent conflict.
Brutal Realism and Innovation in Simulations
The on-site situation is designed to be as realistic as possible, providing soldiers with an experience almost identical to real-world scenarios. Simulations include dozens of missile impact sites, resembling those from a fictional June 2025 scenario where Iranian missiles destroyed thousands of buildings. Colonel S., whose name cannot be disclosed for security reasons, stated that the IDF is prepared for anything, including a new war. „This site simulates both a situation where rockets hit and an earthquake,” he explained, adding that the search for bodies among the rubble is also simulated.
To achieve this level of realism, the IDF collaborates with Extreme Simulations, an Israeli specialized company. Oriel Herman, the company’s CEO, confirmed that his team has trained over 200,000 soldiers since October 7, providing medical and disaster response simulations, including treatment in confined spaces and mass casualty incident management. Dummies that emit sounds, fake blood, and smoke machines contribute to creating an overwhelmingly realistic environment.
Advanced Technology Supporting Rescues
In addition to traditional equipment, the brigade is actively exploring new technologies. Drones are being given an important role in search and rescue missions, and artificial intelligence (AI) is being evaluated for its ability to ingest and distill complex data from an incident site. Col. S. emphasized that AI could accelerate the processes of identifying missing persons and coordinating rescue teams, leveraging the Home Front Command’s existing datasets, which include community information and mobile phone locations.
Lessons from the Past, Foundations for the Future
Israel, with extensive experience in managing missile threats, bases its preparedness on lessons learned. Starting with the 1991 Gulf War, strict construction codes were enacted, mandating the inclusion of safe rooms and armored shelters in buildings. The effectiveness of these measures has been tested recently, during conflicts with Iran and Hamas, proving that, despite some direct hits, most shelters saved lives. „Even shelters from the 90s that took a hit saved lives,” an official remarked.
The integration of the Home Front Command’s capabilities with close partnerships with local authorities and emergency organizations „strengthens national resilience and ensures a response to every challenge,” concluded Lt. Gen. Zamir, reiterating the IDF’s commitment to using „unprecedented” offensive capabilities against any threat.
