In a surprise move, Major General Stephen Purdy, who until recently oversaw space acquisition within the Department of the Air Force, has been reassigned to a new strategic position: „senior advisor” to Secretary Troy Meink. This personnel change raises questions but underscores the growing importance of the space domain for national security.
Rapid Leadership Changes Underway
Effective February 20, Major General Purdy has assumed the role of Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition. A Space Force spokesperson confirmed the move but did not disclose the reasons behind the decision. Until recently, Purdy simultaneously held the positions of acting head of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration (SAF/SQ) and military deputy to that office. He had announced his step down from the acting head role on January 22, after a year-long tenure.
Leadership Vacancy and New Appointments
The position of Assistant Secretary for Space Acquisition, who also serves as the Department of Defense’s Space Acquisition Executive (SAE), remains vacant, with Frank Calvelli being the last occupant during the Biden administration. In the absence of a permanent appointment, the Air Force has tapped Tom Ainsworth to „perform the duties” of the assistant secretary at SAF/SQ.
Additionally, Brigadier General Panzenhagen has been named the new military deputy at SAF/SQ. Panzenhagen brings extensive experience, having previously held four key positions: Program Executive Officer for Assured Access to Space, commander of Space Launch Delta 45, director of the Eastern Range, and director of Launch and Range Operations at Space Systems Command.
The New Senior Advisor’s Role: A Bridge to the Future
While the exact nature of General Purdy’s new senior advisor role is not entirely clear, his LinkedIn profile offers some clues: „[a]dvising SECAF on the entire DAF Space Acquisition portfolio and working special projects.” This description suggests a strategic coordination and expertise role, crucial in an ever-expanding domain.
This personnel shift comes at a crucial time. Space Force leaders anticipate a significant budget boost for fiscal year 2027. Furthermore, they will face the challenge of ensuring seamless integration of a wide range of programs that will play a supporting role in the Trump administration’s ambitious plan to create a „Golden Dome missile shield.” General Purdy’s reassignment could be a strategic maneuver aimed at optimizing acquisition processes and ensuring coherence in the face of these major objectives.
