The United States Army has marked a pivotal moment in its modern defense strategy by signing a landmark agreement with the United Kingdom. This partnership establishes fundamental ground rules for intelligence sharing on drone and counter-drone operations, representing the first of several team-ups that Army Secretary Dan Driscoll aims to foster with international allies and partners.

A Landmark Pact for Essential Intelligence Sharing Secretary Driscoll revealed that he and Brig. Gen. Matthew Ross, director of the Army’s Joint Interagency Task Force 401, traveled to the UK last month to formalize this intelligence-sharing partnership. „We signed a document with them that basically said, ‘Hey, we’re going to work on this together. We’re going to figure out how […], like what are the rules for sharing information?’” Driscoll explained during a town hall meeting at Fort Drum, New York. He underscored that drones can quickly penetrate airspace and are inherently difficult to predict, unlike missiles with foreseeable trajectories. Such a challenge necessitates rapid and efficient information exchange between allies.

Global Reach: Building a United Front Against Aerial Threats Driscoll added that the United States plans to expand this initiative to „a couple of other countries,” with the ultimate goal of enabling the Army to develop and procure the same tools as its partners. The vision is clear: such an arrangement will make the US and its allies „stronger” in any future conflict where they might have to fight together. „We have a lot of the same software as our allies around the world. So when you train with them, when you travel, when you are deployed abroad, and when one day, if you have to fight with them… hopefully dealing with counter-drone and the threat of drones today has made us a lot stronger for that fight,” Driscoll concluded.

Allied Synergy: From Joint Exercises to Collaborative Innovation While Secretary Driscoll did not disclose which other nations are targeted for future drone intelligence arrangements, the US Army has been actively engaged in drone and counter-drone exercises and competitions with various partner nations in recent months. A notable example is the Flytrap 4.5 competition, where the Army, alongside vendors from the US and allied nations, simulated threats from Group 1-3 (small- to medium-sized) drones operating in NATO airspace.

In parallel, American soldiers from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command joined their Polish and Romanian counterparts for a 10-day training session, learning to operate the American-made Merops counter-drone platform, which has seen nearly two years of use in Ukraine. Furthermore, last February, India and the US established the Autonomous Systems Industry Alliance, aimed at „scaling industry partnerships and production in the Indo-Pacific.” This alliance includes a plan for Anduril and the Mahindra Group to collaborate on autonomous projects, including co-developing and co-producing „advanced AI-enabled” counter-UAS capabilities.

Frontline Technology: Pentagon Unveils Replicator 2’s First Counter-Drone Systems Secretary Driscoll’s revelation about the teaming agreement coincided with news that Task Force 401 has made its first counter-drone purchase under the second phase of the high-profile Replicator acquisition program. The Pentagon confirmed that the task force is procuring „two advanced DroneHunter F700 systems, which are expected to be delivered by April.”

The DroneHunter F700 system, manufactured by Fortem Technologies, is a six-rotor unmanned aerial system designed to fire nets to capture other drones mid-air. According to the company, „Once the F700 is within range of the target, escape is highly improbable,” boasting an 85% statistical success rate on the first attempt. Gen. Ross underscored the importance of this acquisition: „We have just one measure of effectiveness: to deliver state-of-the-art counter-UAS capabilities to our warfighters both at home and abroad. This purchase of the DroneHunter system is a key first step in accomplishing our Replicator 2 mission.”
