President-elect Donald Trump revealed two significant nominations for the defense sector today: Daniel Driscoll, an adviser to Vice President-elect JD Vance, will lead the US Army in its highest civilian position, and Peter Navarro will serve as the senior counselor for trade and manufacturing.

“As a former soldier, investor, and political advisor, Dan brings a powerful combination of experiences to serve as a disruptor and change agent,” Trump stated on Truth Social.

According to the announcement, Driscoll is a Yale Law School graduate and a former Army soldier. Trump praised Driscoll’s contributions in private equity, declaring he will be a “fearless and relentless fighter for America’s soldiers and the America First agenda.”

The Pentagon’s video archive includes an interview with a young officer named Daniel Driscoll, whose deployment to Iraq aligns with the details mentioned by Trump.

If confirmed by the Senate as the 26th Army Secretary, Driscoll will take over a service that is undergoing modernization of its weapon portfolio, increasing the defense industrial base, and addressing recruitment challenges.

In the case of Navarro, Trump is appointing a loyalist who spent approximately four months in jail for refusing to comply with a Congressional subpoena investigating the events of January 6, 2021—an act Trump referred to as Navarro being “treated horribly by the Deep State, or whatever else you would like to call it.”

In his new role, Navarro, 75, will be tasked with “helping to successfully advance and communicate the Trump Manufacturing, Tariff, and Trade Agendas,” according to the statement.

During Trump’s first administration, Navarro was a prominent advocate for the notion that “economic security is national security,” which was reflected in his support for increased defense exports. He also played a crucial role in reviewing the defense industrial base to identify vulnerabilities in the supply chain.

These announcements come amidst reports that the nomination of Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary has hit some obstacles, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reportedly emerging as a potential backup if Hegseth struggles to secure support in the Senate.
