General Saltzman highlights the Space Force’s focus on warfighting and counterspace capabilities in the context of potential FY26 budget reductions.

General Chance Saltzman, Chief of Space Operations, expressed confidence in the Space Force’s alignment with the current administration’s priorities, despite an anticipated 8 percent budget reduction across the services for Fiscal Year 2026. He emphasized the Space Force’s proactive approach, focusing on warfighting readiness and emerging threats, which he believes aligns well with the administration’s strategic goals. This assessment is supported by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recent emphasis on the space domain’s critical role in future warfare and commitment to increased investment in both offensive and defensive space capabilities.

While declining to specify the areas targeted for budget reduction within the Space Force’s 8 percent contribution, General Saltzman indicated that the service prioritized cuts to its lowest-priority programs. He reiterated the service’s core priorities: strengthening space domain awareness, enhancing resilience, and developing capabilities to deter and, if necessary, counter adversarial actions in space to safeguard joint force operations.

General Saltzman highlighted the shift in military thinking towards recognizing space as a contested warfighting domain. This acknowledgment is driving the service’s focus on developing offensive and defensive counterspace capabilities. He outlined a strategy centered around six categories of counterspace weapons, mirroring China’s own investments in this area. These categories encompass ground-based and space-based jammers, directed energy weapons, and kinetic weapons. The optimal resource allocation across these six categories is currently under strategic review, but General Saltzman stressed the importance of comprehensive investment in all areas given China’s demonstrated commitment to similar capabilities.
