In response to the devastating impact of small drones on the battlefields of Ukraine, defense electronics leader L3Harris has unveiled a software-driven revolution: the conversion of standard-issue handheld radios into personal electronic warfare „bubbles.” This innovation allows soldiers to carry their own counter-UAS protection, turning a communication tool into a life-saving defensive shield.
Hardware Stability, Software Lethality: The „Wraith Shield” Breakthrough
The new capability, branded as Wraith Shield, requires no new hardware, relying instead on a sophisticated software upgrade to the existing Falcon IV series. With over 100,000 of these software-defined radios currently in service worldwide, the upgrade offers an incredibly cost-effective path to modernizing infantry defense. For the price of a digital license, an existing walkie-talkie becomes a frontline sensor and jammer.
Industry executives report significant domestic and international interest, with several customers poised to purchase the upgrade as soon as export approvals are secured. Military leadership is already considering streamlining acquisitions by treating this electronic warfare capability as a routine radio enhancement, ensuring rapid deployment to active units.
AI-Driven Swarm Defense: Synchronized Jamming at the Platoon Level
At the heart of Wraith Shield is a collaboration with AI specialists to exploit the digital processing power of modern radios. Developed with extensive input from combat scenarios in Ukraine, the Wraith waveform scans the airwaves to distinguish between friendly signals and enemy drone controllers. Once an adversary is spotted, the system coordinates all local radios to broadcast „white noise,” effectively severing the drone’s command link.
The current version can synchronize jamming across 40 Falcon radios simultaneously—enough to cover an entire infantry platoon—with engineers aiming to scale that capacity to 100 units in future updates. Depending on the drone’s programming, this interference causes the threat to either circle aimlessly, crash, or trigger an automated „return to home” function, potentially exposing the enemy operator’s location.
A New Layer of Protection in the Modern Attrition War
While not a „silver bullet” for every unmanned threat, Wraith Shield provides a critical layer of defense that individual soldiers currently lack. By integrating counter-drone capabilities into gear that is already part of a soldier’s standard loadout, the system minimizes weight while maximizing survival. This development signals a new era in defense technology where the boundaries between tactical communications and electronic warfare are permanently blurred to protect the individual warfighter
