Defense firm AeroVironment (AV), a leading manufacturer of uncrewed systems, today announced a strategic move to acquire Empirical Systems Aerospace (ESAero), a California-based UAS engineering company, in a deal valued at approximately $200 million. This acquisition underscores AeroVironment’s aggressive expansion strategy in a rapidly evolving defense technology market.

Strategic Play in a High-Demand Market

ESAero is set to continue operations from its California facilities, but will now function as a subsidiary of AV, integrated into its Precision Strike and Defense Systems group and Loitering Munition Systems business unit. This structure aims to leverage ESAero’s unique capabilities to accelerate AV’s development and manufacturing cycles.

Wahid Nawabi, CEO of AeroVironment, emphasized the critical importance of the merger. “ESAero brings an impressive agility in moving from design to manufacturing, which will accelerate AV’s ability to bridge the gap between conceptual design and manufacturing execution. ESAero’s capabilities are vital to addressing the urgent demands of a fast-growing defense tech market, where emerging needs are driving next-generation innovation and product development.”

California to Become Advanced Prototyping Hub

AeroVironment highlighted ESAero’s California facilities as a key asset, stating they will be dedicated to „improving their manufacturing capabilities” and establishing them as a „center of excellence for advanced prototyping and manufacturing.” The leadership and workforce of ESAero are expected to be fully integrated into AeroVironment’s broader operations, ensuring continuity and seamless knowledge transfer.

Based in Virginia, AeroVironment is well-known for its range of uncrewed systems and loitering munitions, including the highly effective Switchblade, which has seen deployment in Ukraine. The company also specializes in tactical missile systems and related services across various domains.

AeroVironment’s Accelerated Growth Trajectory

This acquisition marks AeroVironment’s second significant purchase within the last 12 months, following its substantial $4.1 billion acquisition of BlueHalo last May. This series of high-profile mergers reflects AV’s concerted effort to expand its technological capabilities and market presence in the autonomous systems and defense sectors.

Andrew Gibson, CEO and co-founder of ESAero, expressed optimism about the future. “Joining AV represents a unique opportunity to amplify the reach and impact of our innovative work and achieve greater success. By combining ESAero’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities with AV’s unmatched expertise in autonomous systems, we are positioned to advance disruptive aerospace technologies and deliver real, timely value for our customers.”
