As Israel finds itself embroiled in a multi-front conflict, facing direct confrontations with Iran and Hezbollah, the nation’s Ministry of Defense has declared that maintaining robust munitions stockpiles is an absolute strategic priority. This intensive procurement and production effort is deemed crucial for sustaining ongoing high-tempo military operations.

Critical Visits to the Heart of National Defense

Last week, Israeli Ministry of Defense Director General Amir Baram made pivotal visits to three of the country’s defense industrial giants – Elbit Systems, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The message was unequivocal: replenishing various types of munitions is a central concern for national security.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have reported carrying out 7,600 strikes in Iran with 4,700 air sorties, while simultaneously conducting strikes in Lebanon and mobilizing troops to the northern front. Defensively, Israeli air defense systems have been contending with daily ballistic missile attacks from Iran and increased rocket fire from Hezbollah. To maintain such an operational tempo, Israel’s defense industrial base is mandated to accelerate production significantly.

The War Machine in Overdrive

During his visit to Elbit on March 9, Baram highlighted that „months of preparation and early readiness have enabled the IDF to operate with virtually no constraints in Iran and Lebanon.” He further stated, „At the same time, we are now working to replenish all munitions expended in order to be prepared for any scenario. The decisions we made to expand and accelerate production lines in Israel before the operation will now allow us to take production rates to the next level.”

Baram lauded Israel’s „unique ecosystem that no other country can match,” emphasizing a distinct integration between the IDF, the Defense Ministry, and the defense industries, which allows for the rapid translation of operational needs and battlefield lessons into real-time modifications.

Subsequently, during his visit to Rafael on March 12, Baram attributed the „historic achievements” in Iran, in part, to the defense industry. „Decades of research, development, and testing have provided the State of Israel with groundbreaking capabilities unmatched by any other nation,” he asserted. Rafael confirmed it has shifted into a continuous wartime support mode to ensure munitions remain stocked, stating, „Rafael is engaged in continuous and intensive activity in support of the operational efforts of Operation ‘Roaring Lion’.” While specific munitions types were not detailed, speculation suggests artillery shells, vital for any expanded ground fighting in Lebanon, are among those being prioritized.

Space: The Ultimate Strategic Superpower

Beyond munitions, Israel’s strategic investment in space systems—satellites and imaging—has played an integral role in current operations. Baram described these capabilities as a „superpower.”

At Israel Aerospace Industries on March 5, Baram „visited an operational ground station serving a number of the defense establishment’s satellites, reviewed real-time operational satellite imagery from the fighting in Iran, and discussed the latest developments in the space domain and their direct contribution to IDF strikes in the current campaign.” He declared, „Space is a first-order strategic national priority. We will continue to advance the buildup of space power by every means possible.”

Securing Wartime Supply Lines

To keep Israel’s industrial base on track, an uninterrupted flow of supplies is imperative, especially during wartime. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the country’s Ashdod Port on March 10, asserting, „The State of Israel is showing the world what a fighting nation, a fighting state, and a super-resilient economy look like.”

The Prime Minister’s Office noted that during a tour of the port, Netanyahu conducted an „assessment regarding the continuity of Israel’s maritime trade in the midst of Operation Roaring Lion.” This assessment included an examination of „port operations, the unloading of goods and supplies for the Israeli economy, and the existing inventory reserves that ensure economic stability.” Ashdod port handles approximately forty percent of Israel’s maritime trade, with almost all of the nation’s imports and exports arriving by sea.

A Vital Aerial Lifeline for the Arsenal: 1,000 Tons of Military Equipment

In addition to maritime routes, Israel has also initiated a massive military airlift, with 50 cargo aircraft landing between February 28 and March 9. The Ministry of Defense specified that this procurement effort has delivered 1,000 tons of weaponry, military equipment, and various types of munitions by air.

The aerial airlift is spearheaded by the IMOD Defense Procurement Directorate (DPD), through its International Shipping Division, the IMOD Missions to the United States and Germany, and the IDF’s Planning Directorate. The Israel Airports Authority and the Israel Civil Aviation Authority are also integral partners in this crucial logistical operation.
