Key Milestone Achieved as Pentagon Pursues Drone Wingmen

The Air Force has officially announced the commencement of flight testing for its Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program, marking a crucial step forward in the Pentagon’s ambitious endeavor to deploy drone wingmen.

GA-ASI’s YFQ-42A Leads the Charge

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems’s (GA-ASI) YFQ-42A secured the inaugural flight, as revealed by the Air Force on Wednesday. This drone is one of the two frontrunners vying for selection in the current phase of the CCA program. Anduril’s contender, now designated the YFQ-44A, is reportedly „on track” and anticipated to commence flight testing shortly, according to an Air Force spokesperson.

„Concept to Flight” in Record Time

„This milestone demonstrates what can be achieved when innovative acquisition strategies converge with motivated industry partners,” declared Air Force Secretary Troy Meink in a press release. „CCA’s rapid transition from concept to flight underscores our capacity to deliver combat capability swiftly by eliminating barriers and aligning efforts around the warfighter.”

Rigorous Testing and Operational Assessments Ahead

Both the YFQ-42A and YFQ-44A are slated for further trials at Edwards Air Force Base in California, a pivotal center for the Air Force’s flight testing operations, in addition to „vendor-led developmental” work. Moreover, the Air Force’s Experimental Operations Unit at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada is poised to conduct „operational assessments” aimed at refining the tactical deployment of these drones, as indicated in the release.

Preparing for Global Deployment

The Air Force had previously designated Beale Air Force Base in California as the home of the CCA program’s first „aircraft readiness unit.” This unit will be responsible for maintaining the drones, ensuring their readiness for flight, and enabling their swift deployment worldwide. Both the Anduril and General Atomics candidates underwent ground testing earlier in the year.

Industry Leaders Celebrate Progress

„This is a momentous occasion for the U.S. Air Force and GA-ASI,” remarked GA-ASI President David Alexander in a company press release. „Our collaboration has enabled us to build and fly the YFQ-42A in just over a year. It’s an extraordinary accomplishment, and I commend the Air Force for its vision and our development team for achieving yet another historic first for our company.”

Jason Levin, Anduril’s senior vice president of engineering for air dominance and strike, stated in a company statement: „Flight test is a milestone that always generates excitement, regardless of one’s role. Congratulations to General Atomics and the U.S. Air Force for initiating flight testing for YFQ-42A – a significant step towards fielding Increment 1 CCAs by the end of the decade.”

Multibillion Dollar Investment

The CCA program, unveiled by the Air Force as a major multibillion-dollar initiative in the fiscal year 2024 budget, aims to initially field up to 1,000 drones. Anduril and General Atomics were selected for the CCA program’s initial „increment” last year, which is primarily focused on air-to-air missions, while a parallel effort is dedicated to developing the drones’ autonomy. General Atomics’s YFQ-42A is derived from the company’s XQ-67A, which was developed for the Air Force’s Off-Board Sensing Station program, while Anduril’s YFQ-44A is based on the Fury drone acquired through the acquisition of Blue Force Technologies in 2023.

Future Designs on the „Low End”?

While a second CCA increment was initially anticipated to launch in FY25, the impact of a year-long continuing resolution and the Trump administration’s priorities on these plans remains uncertain. A high-ranking Air Force official recently suggested that future drone designs may lean towards the „low end,” implying a focus on cheaper, less sophisticated designs.

Dark Horse Contenders Possible

The Air Force has indicated that external candidates can still compete for the Increment 1 production decision, raising the prospect of an unexpected contender securing a deal. In its press release on Wednesday, the Air Force stated that a „competitive” production decision „is expected in fiscal year 2026.”
