Poland has officially signed a $300 million leasing agreement for eight AH-64D Apache attack helicopters, providing the Polish Land Forces with an immediate capability boost while they await full delivery of new aircraft. This strategic move underscores Poland’s commitment to advancing its military capabilities and readiness.

Key Details of the Leasing Agreement The agreement was signed on February 27 by Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, at the Latkowo base, home to the 1st Land Forces Aviation Brigade. The leasing contract includes not only the helicopters but also comprehensive support for training and operational readiness.

Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the importance of this decision, stating that the goal is to ensure soldiers gain the necessary skills and experience to operate the incoming Apaches effectively. “We are investing $300 million to ensure our pilots and ground support personnel are well-prepared to take control of this equipment,” he noted.

Future Apache Deliveries In addition to the leasing agreement, Poland had previously signed a Letter of Acceptance for a $10 billion order of 96 Boeing-made AH-64E Apaches through a Foreign Military Sale agreement, positioning Poland as the second-largest Apache operator globally, behind the United States. Deliveries of the AH-64E helicopters are anticipated between 2028 and 2032, with an initial batch of 15 expected in the first year.

Once fully integrated into the Polish military, the Apaches will be assigned to the 1st Land Forces Aviation Brigade (1 BLWL), which comprises the 49th Air Base in Pruszcz Gdański and the 56th Air Base in Inowrocław, among others. These helicopters are set to be stationed in Inowrocław, Malbork, and Świdnik.

Accelerating Training and Operations The leased Apaches will allow the Polish military to begin training and operational activities ahead of the delivery of the new helicopters. “With this leasing agreement, we will be ready to accept the helicopters more swiftly and will have trained crews equipped to operate this advanced machinery,” Kosiniak-Kamysz stated. The leasing deal will also include essential components such as spare parts, logistic support, simulators, and armaments to maximize preparedness.

In preparation for these roles, the first Polish aviators have recently completed various courses, including the AH-64E Aviation Qualification Course and the AH-64E helicopter repairer training at Fort Novosel in Alabama.

Economic Benefits of the Deal The Deputy Minister of National Defense, Paweł Bejda, highlighted the economic advantages of the leasing agreement, which incorporates commercial offsets from Boeing. These offsets will enable local facilities, such as the Military Aviation Plant No. 1 in Łódź and Dęblin, to service the helicopters and their engines, which are also utilized in other aircraft like the Leonardo AW101, AW149, and Sikorsky Black Hawk.

Furthermore, the Military University of Technology will be involved in training technicians and engineers for the maintenance and repair of the helicopter components and engines, ensuring that a significant portion of defense spending remains within Poland.

Conclusion: Strengthening Defense Capabilities This leasing agreement represents a crucial step for Poland as it modernizes its military capabilities and prepares its forces for future challenges. By investing in immediate operational capacity through the leasing of Apache helicopters, Poland not only enhances its defense posture but also fosters domestic industry growth, ensuring that a substantial portion of military expenditures supports local enterprises and expertise.
