Army Secretary Christine Wormuth has officially relieved General Charles Hamilton, head of Army Material Command, from his position after an investigation revealed his involvement in the selection of senior commanders, the service confirmed.
“Based on the findings of a Department of the Army Inspector General investigation, the Secretary of the Army has relieved General Charles Hamilton of command,” service spokesperson Cynthia Smith stated in a brief announcement today.
Military.com first reported the decision and covered the initial investigation into allegations that Hamilton facilitated a leadership appointment for a subordinate officer who had previously been deemed unfit for command. Following these allegations, which emerged in March, the four-star general was suspended from his role overseeing the Army’s global supply chain, logistics, and sustainment. Lt. Gen. Christopher Mohan, the command’s deputy, took over Hamilton’s responsibilities and is currently leading the AMC.
In the meantime, the Army IG office conducted an inquiry into the situation and documented its findings. Although Breaking Defense has not received the report, Smith noted that it determined the Command Assessment Program (CAP) “withstood an attempt to interfere with its process,” but that improvements are required.
“Secretary Wormuth will issue a directive to formally establish CAP as a permanent Army program to reinforce its integrity and enhance transparency,” Smith added.
