In a significant move to advance the space sector, the United Arab Emirates’ defense powerhouse, EDGE Group, has launched a new company called FADA, aimed at enhancing the country’s defense-related space capabilities. The announcement was made today in an official statement.

“EDGE is dedicated to promoting the UAE’s strategic interests in defense and advanced technology, and FADA’s mission focuses on developing sovereign space capabilities and homegrown technologies within the UAE,” the statement revealed.

The name FADA, which translates to „space” in Arabic, reflects the company’s commitment to establishing a robust national space sector tailored to meet the UAE’s requirements. It aims to foster international partnerships that will enable the Transfer of Technology (ToT) and Transfer of Knowledge (ToK).

FADA is set to create state-of-the-art facilities for the development, manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing of various satellite systems and subsystems. It will serve as a comprehensive hub for all space-related activities, providing end-to-end solutions and services to both local and international clients. These services will encompass Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Optical (EO), and Infrared (IR) payloads, satellite platforms, along with satellite cybersecurity and protection services.

Hamad Al Marar, CEO of EDGE Group, stated that the formation of FADA „will enable EDGE to grow and strengthen its position in the global space industry, in line with the UAE’s vision of becoming a leader in space technologies and creating a blueprint for a self-sufficient, innovative ecosystem.”

Waleid Al Mesmari, EDGE Group’s head of space and cyber technologies, emphasized that one of FADA’s goals is to facilitate the development of satellite systems while cultivating a sustainable and skilled workforce focused on space.

The UAE released its National Space Strategy 2030 in 2019, committing over $800 million to a national space fund in 2021 to build local capabilities, enhance economic contributions, and solidify the UAE’s standing in the space sector.

The establishment of FADA aligns with this ambitious vision, marking a significant step for the UAE in the defense-related space domain. EDGE has previously engaged in numerous collaborations with Western defense firms to develop local platforms within the country.

Moreover, the UAE is not alone in its pursuit of space exploration; Saudi Arabia is also looking to enhance its space sector, with plans to merge its air force and space force as part of its strategic initiatives.
