A new chapter in military space cooperation has unfolded with the successful joint maneuvers conducted by French and American military satellites. These operations, integral to the US Space Command’s multinational „Operation Olympic Defender” space warplan, highlight an advanced capability for joint response and maneuvering in orbit, significantly bolstering allied efforts to deter hostile actions in space.
Proximity Maneuvers: A New Operational Frontier
Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPOs) involve two satellites maneuvering in close proximity, a critical technique with diverse applications. From inspecting and refueling satellites to performing complex repairs, or even, in conflict scenarios, neutralizing an adversary’s satellite, RPOs represent a strategic capability of paramount importance. The recent bilateral exercise underscores France’s commitment to conducting dynamic and responsible operations to safeguard its space interests. While this marked the second encounter between French and American satellites, it was notably the first to be jointly planned under the „Olympic Defender” framework.
An Expanding Coalition: The Stake of Orbital Security
The shared commitment in the space domain is powerfully articulated by a US Space Command spokesperson, who noted that these bilateral operations demonstrate not only the coalition’s capacity to plan and execute dynamic space missions but also a steadfast dedication to standing shoulder-to-shoulder in defense of shared interests in space. „Operation Olympic Defender,” a US-led initiative, received a significant boost last year with France’s participation, joining five other allied nations: Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The ongoing refinement of common tactics through combined planning, training, and execution is deemed vital for the maturation of this multinational force.
Prying Eyes: Revelations About the Satellites Involved
Although the participating partners have not publicly disclosed the specific satellites involved in these RPOs, independent space-tracking firms have offered intriguing insights. According to COMSPOC, a company specializing in space domain awareness, previous maneuvers with the United Kingdom involved a US GSSAP (Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program) satellite, USA 271, which approached within 13 kilometers of the UK’s SKYNET 5A military communications satellite.
Regarding the recent Franco-American „pas-de-deux,” COMSPOC points to the involvement of another GSSAP, USA 324, and France’s SYRACUSE 3A. These satellites reportedly executed three sets of maneuvers between November 11-14, November 22-23, and November 28-29, with the closest approach recorded at approximately 25.1 kilometers. Observations suggest a leading role for SYRACUSE 3A, with USA 324 following its movements with a one-day lag.
Charting a Collaborative Course in Space
Senior Space Force officials have confirmed advanced discussions with other „Olympic Defender” partners for similar operations, indicating a clear trajectory towards increased operational integration. As the „Multinational Force – Operation Olympic Defender” continues to evolve into an integrated operational team poised to collectively respond to threats in the domain, the future of space security appears to be paved with collaboration and military innovation.
